Since November, sixth, seventh, and eighth-grade Montrose students have been diligently working on a musical production of Honk! Jr. This is the school?s first musical production put on only by middle school students in the recent years. The show tells the story of the Ugly Duckling in a fresh, new way. ?Ugly? is bullied on the farm for his appearance by the barn animals, his siblings, and his father Drake, and only his mother Ida accepts him and realizes that he is special in his own way. Ugly wanders off from the duck yard and meets a spunky bullfrog, a beautiful swan named Penny, a duck-eating cat, and many other colorful characters. Ugly learns that ?different is just different? and that it?s what inside us that really counts.
Mrs. Holly Sullivan, Montrose?s middle school music teacher and upper school drama teacher, directs the students in this production. Mrs. Sullivan says, ?I chose this show because it works well with an all-girl group of actors. Also, it is a classic tale with a great message told in a fun new way. The show is not that well-known, so the girls will have the joy of bringing an unknown version of ?The Ugly Duckling? to the audience. I am so excited to see the audience?s reaction. The show has lots of fun group numbers and colorful characters, and Ugly?s transformation is wonderful to watch. I am so proud that we took a group of girls with many different backgrounds in performing and made them a team to put on this fantastic show!?
Please join us for the Montrose Middle School production of Honk! Jr. on Friday, February 10 at 7:00 PM or on Saturday, February 11 at 7:00 PM. The performances will take place in the M&M Building on the Montrose Campus, and admission is free for all. All are welcome and we hope to see you there!
