The third and final episode in our NYC Trilogy is all about Food Porn. After watching chickens get slaughtered in Queens and vegetables grow in several boroughs, this Manhattan video is just a montage of our wonderful dinner at Prune Restaurant one evening in September. It was amazing to cook at such an incredible place and with such great company.

It's never nice to beat a dead horse when it's down and the same seems to be true for the litigious mudslinging Ma Bell's had to endure. Now that the nation's second largest carrier has been granted a stay in its pending and publicly messy T-Mobile acquisition, vocal opponents like Sprint and C Spire are withdrawing their respective suits (and fangs) to block the merger for the time being. But don't take this latest courtroom move as a supportive change of heart -- both wireless companies will likely lawyer up again in the new year when these M&A wheels begin to roll anew. So while this potential AT&T&T deal appears to be dead in the water, there's always a chance it'll resurface with an extra face.

Philippine health chief hit for anti-gay comments (AP)

MANILA, Philippines ? The Philippine health chief is under attack for suggesting at an AIDS conference that health workers survey homes of gay children and warn their parents about potentially risky behavior.

Health Secretary Enrique Ona said that "parents should rein in their homosexual children and get them tested." He made the remark in a speech at Friday's conference while discussing options for voluntary testing for young people who are most at risk of HIV/AIDS.

The Philippines Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender advocacy group called for Ona's resignation Monday. Ona's office did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

Government spokeswoman Abigail Valte said "we do not support any discrimination" but did not comment on the resignation call.

The smokescreen of reclassifying pot for health

Two governors have asked the DEA to reclassify marijuana for medical use. But their real problem is in not opposing the backdoor ruse for legalization of cannabis.

Too many elected state leaders still fall for the idea that legalizing ?medical? marijuana really isn?t about a well-monied national campaign to legalize all pot use.

And yet, truth be told, it is.

The latest twist in this ongoing political ruse is a request by two governors to have marijuana reclassified under federal drug law ? even though such an effort is really a sideshow.

On Nov. 30, Gov. Chris Gregoire (D) of Washington and Gov. Lincoln Chafee (I) of Rhode Island asked the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) to change how marijuana is rated as a drug under the Controlled Substances Act. Their 106-page petition seeks to have cannabis designated for limited medical use ? a category known as ?Schedule II? ? while still retaining its status as a harmful substance with a high potential for abuse.

The governors claim they simply want safe access to pot for the ill in the 16 states that have so far decriminalized pot for medical reasons. Both of them are frustrated by recent federal crackdowns on the trafficking of ?medical? marijuana. To protect state employees and others from being prosecuted, they recently killed proposals passed by their legislatures to allow pot dispensaries.

Rather than simply uphold the federal ban, the governors have caved to powerful pro-pot forces that seek legalization through the backdoor. They know the DEA only last July decided not to remove marijuana from Schedule I ? the most restrictive category ? based on a lack of consensus in the medical field. The agency found ?a material conflict of opinion among experts.?

And this was the third time in recent decades that the DEA has denied such a petition.

The federal crackdown picked up steam two months ago in California, where four US Attorneys decided to end the abuse of marijuana dispensaries by thousands of people who have few health problems. Many California dispensaries were also shipping pot around the country.

The raids in California and other states are not aimed at individuals using pot for medical reasons. Rather they are directed at those who profit from the growing or selling of pot ? and who extend those sales way beyond ?medical? use.

As DEA Administrator Michele Leonhart says, ?The known risks of marijuana use have not been shown to be outweighed by specific benefits in well-controlled clinical trials that scientifically evaluate safety and efficacy.?

But of course, the real issue isn?t whether the medical use of pot makes sense (especially when smoked). Instead, governors should simply uphold federal law ? and Obama administration policy ? that finds marijuana has too many adverse effects.

States should not be frustrating federal law by playing into the hands of the pro-pot legalization campaign.

Sharp decline in pollution from U.S. coal power plants, NASA satellite confirms

ScienceDaily (Dec. 1, 2011) ? A team of scientists have used the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) on NASA's Aura satellite to confirm major reductions in the levels of a key air pollutant generated by coal power plants in the eastern United States. The pollutant, sulfur dioxide, contributes to the formation of acid rain and can cause serious health problems.

The scientists, led by an Environment Canada researcher, have shown that sulfur dioxide levels in the vicinity of major coal power plants have fallen by nearly half since 2005. The new findings, the first satellite observations of this type, confirm ground-based measurements of declining sulfur dioxide levels and demonstrate that scientists can potentially measure levels of harmful emissions throughout the world, even in places where ground monitoring is not extensive or does not exist. About two-thirds of sulfur dioxide pollution in American air comes from coal power plants. Geophysical Research Letters published details of the new research this month.

The scientists attribute the decline in sulfur dioxide to the Clean Air Interstate Rule, a rule passed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in 2005 that called for deep cuts in sulfur dioxide emissions. In response to that rule, many power plants in the United States have installed desulfurization devices and taken other steps that limit the release of sulfur dioxide. The rule put a cap on emissions, but left it up to power companies to determine how to reduce emissions and allowed companies to trade pollution credits.

While scientists have used the Ozone Monitoring Instrument to observe sulfur dioxide levels within large plumes of volcanic ash and over heavily polluted parts of China in the past, this is the first time they have observed such subtle details over the United States, a region of the world that in comparison to fast-growing parts of Asia now has relatively modest sulfur dioxide emissions. Just a few decades ago, sulfur dioxide pollution was quite severe in the United States. Levels of the pollutant have dropped by about 75 percent since the 1980s due largely to the passage of the Clean Air Act.

Vitali Fioletov, a scientist based in Toronto at Environment Canada, and his colleagues developed a new mathematical approach that made the improved measurements a reality. The approach centers on averaging measurements within a 30 miles radius (50 km) of a sulfur dioxide source over several years. "Vitali has developed an extremely powerful technique that makes it possible to detect emissions even when levels of sulfur dioxide are about four times lower than what we could detect previously," said Nickolay Krotkov, a researcher based at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., and a coauthor of the new paper.

The technique allowed Fioletov and his colleagues to pinpoint the sulfur dioxide signals from the 40 largest sulfur dioxide sources in the United States -- generally coal power plants that emit more than 70 kilotons of sulfur dioxide per year. The scientists observed major declines in sulfur dioxide emissions from power plants in Alabama, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia by comparing levels of the pollutant for an average of the period 2005 to 2007 with another average from 2008 to 2010.

"What we're seeing in these satellite observations represents a major environmental accomplishment," said Bryan Bloomer, an Environmental Protection Agency scientist familiar with the new satellite observations. "This is a huge success story for the EPA and the Clean Air Interstate Rule," he said.

The researchers focused their analysis on the United States to take advantage of the presence of a robust network of ground-based instruments that monitor sulfur dioxide emissions inside power plant smokestacks. The ground-based instruments have logged a 46 percent decline in sulfur dioxide levels since 2005 -- a finding consistent with the 40 percent reduction observed by OMI.

"Now that we've confirmed that the technique works, the next step is to use it for other parts of the world that don't have ground-based sensors," said Krotkov. "The real beauty of using satellites is that we can apply the same technique to the entire globe in a consistent way." In addition, the team plans to use a similar technique to monitor other important pollutants that coal power plants release, such as nitrogen dioxide, a precursor to ozone.

OMI, a Dutch and Finnish built instrument, was launched in 2004, as one of four instruments on the NASA Aura satellite, and can measure sulfur dioxide more accurately than any satellite instrument flown to date. Though OMI remains in very good condition and scientists expect it to continue producing high-quality data for many years, the researchers also hope to use data from an upcoming Dutch-built OMI follow-on instrument called TROPOMI that is expected to launch on a European Space Agency satellite in 2014.

On July 6, 2011, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) finalized the Cross-State Air Pollution Rule (CSAPR), requiring 27 states to significantly reduce power plant emissions that contribute to ozone and fine particle pollution in other states. This rule replaces EPA's 2005 Clean Air Interstate Rule (CAIR). A December 2008 court decision kept the requirements of CAIR in place temporarily but directed EPA to issue a new rule to implement Clean Air Act requirements concerning the transport of air pollution across state boundaries. This action responds to the court's concerns.

Subway bombers in Belarus sentenced to death (AP)

MINSK, Belarus ? A court in Belarus sentenced two men to death after convicting them of carrying out a deadly bombing on the capital's subway system that killed 15 people and wounded hundreds of others.

When the bombing happened at Minsk's busiest subway stop on April 11, Belarus was entering an economic crisis and critics of the ex-Soviet country's repressive government suggested that authorities may have resorted to terrorism in order to distract the country from the troubles. President Alexander Lukashenko denied the speculation.

Investigators said the sentenced men, Dmitry Konovalov and Vladislav Kovalyov, were driven by "hatred for humankind," not political motives. The two men also have been accused of three other nonfatal bombings in 2005 and 2008.

Konovalov and Kovalyov heard their sentencing Wednesday in silence and appeared morose.

The Supreme Court found that Konovalov, from the provincial city of Vitebsk, had constructed the bomb and had stayed with Kovalyov in his Minsk apartment just before the blast. Investigators said Kovalyov was aware of the blast plans.

But Konovalov's lawyer said the evidence presented in court was trivial and inconclusive. The evidence included a videotape of the subway station purportedly showing his client close to the blast site was of uselessly poor quality and he said experts found no traces of explosive materials on Konovalov after his arrest.

"There was no motive, not one piece of direct evidence shown," he said.

One of those injured in the blast also expressed misgivings.

"I came to the first session strongly convinced that those who did it were sitting in the dock, but now I don't have this conviction," Andrei Tyshkevich said.

Belarus is Europe's only country that still puts people to death, and rights activists claim around 400 people have been executed here since the 1991 Soviet collapse. The authoritarian country carries out executions with a bullet to the back of the head; the time and place is a state secret, and relatives of those executed are never told where the bodies are buried.

DETROIT (AP) ? People are finally replacing the cars and trucks they held on to during the economic slump, giving a boost to U.S. auto sales in November.

Chrysler, Ford and Nissan were among the companies reporting double-digit gains from last November, which is normally a lackluster month because of colder weather and holiday distractions. This November, buyers were lured by good deals, improving confidence in the economy and the need to trade in older cars.

"Consumers are just starting to say 'it's time to start spending money again,' " says Larry Dominique, executive vice president of data for the TrueCar.com automotive website.

Several analysts expect last month's U.S. sales pace to be the fastest in more than two years. They project the annual rate for November to range between 13.3 million and 14 million cars and trucks after carmakers finish reporting new vehicle sales Thursday. That's a far better rate than the 12.6 million through the first 10 months of the year.

Sales could even approach the 14.1 million annual pace from August of 2009, when the government offered big rebates for drivers to trade in their gas-guzzling clunkers.

Automakers have expected sales to improve as people who held on to cars during the economic downturn finally return to the market. The average age of a car on U.S. roads is a record 10.6 years, according to Polk, an auto industry research firm. And the rate of cars that are scrapped has surpassed sales for several years.

"There were a lot of people that waited quite a bit of time to get a vehicle," says Ryan LaFontaine, whose Michigan car dealer chain sells 16 foreign and U.S. brands. He said commercial truck sales were strong during the month.

Chrysler Group LLC's sales rose 45 percent from a year earlier. They were led by the Jeep Compass small SUV, which had a nearly ten-fold increase in sales. Jeep brand sales rose 50 percent, while Chrysler brand sales nearly doubled on strong demand for its 200 and 300 sedans. Chrysler raised its incentives to nearly $3,300 per vehicle, up 6 percent from October.

At General Motors Co., buyers snapped up small cars and pickup trucks. Sales of the Chevrolet Cruze compact rose 54 percent, while the Silverado pickup, GM's top-selling vehicle, saw sales jump 34 percent.

"We are seeing a broad spectrum of customers return to the market," says Don Johnson, GM's U.S. sales chief. GM's overall sales were up 7 percent.

Ford Motor Co.'s sales rose 13 percent, fueled by the new Explorer SUV, whose sales more than tripled over last November. Sales of the Escape, which Ford is replacing next year, were also strong.

The increases reflect improving consumer confidence, which rose to its highest level since July last month, according to the Conference Board. October's number was the lowest since the recession.

Attractive leases also spurred sales. Dealers offered good terms because low interest rates and high used-car values make leased vehicles worth more when they're returned. GM, for instance, is offering a Cruze lease at $169 per month for 39 months.

According to TrueCar.com, an auto pricing site, the average industry spending on incentives such as leases and low-interest loans was $2,534 per vehicle in November, up 2.5 percent from October.

DALLAS?? American Airlines, which is slipping farther behind beefed-up rivals United and Delta, could bulk up through a merger with US Airways.

That idea has been floated before. But it's more likely now that American's parent company, AMR Corp., has filed for bankruptcy protection, some analysts say. American will use the bankruptcy process to reduce debt and cut costs that made it untouchable.

American and US Airways declined to comment on whether they would consider a merger, or have talked about it. History suggests they will.

US Airways CEO Doug Parker ? whose company is the product of a merger during bankruptcy ? is a longtime advocate of such combinations. His airline has approached rivals several times over the years about potential tie-ups. In April, Parker said that if United, Delta or American wanted to make a deal, his was the last one left among the biggest airlines.

"They made a run at Delta (while it was in bankruptcy), they made a run at United ... and you can bet that they'll make a run at American in the (bankruptcy) court," said Gordon Bethune, who as CEO led a turnaround at Continental Airlines in the 1990s and was hired by Delta creditors to assess the US Airways takeover bid.

Why an American-US Airways deal makes sense:
American and US Airways are mired in third and fourth place, respectively, behind United and Delta in both passenger traffic, the usual yardstick by which airlines are measured, and in revenue.

It's nearly an article of faith among airline executives and some investors that big is better. Corporate travelers in particular are drawn to the airline with the most impressive route map and flight offerings.

Just three years ago, American bragged about being the biggest airline in the world. It could reclaim that perch ? or come very close to it ? by merging with US Airways. The combined company would leapfrog over Delta Air Lines Inc. and would rival United Continental Holdings Inc. for first place in passenger traffic. AMR and US Airways had combined 2010 revenue of $34 billion, about $2 billion more than Delta.

If American wants to grow, analysts say, the most plausible partner is US Airways ? it's big enough to add meaningful bulk to American's network. American would add US Airways hubs in Phoenix, Charlotte, N.C., a business-travel market because of its concentration of banks, and Philadelphia. US Airways is strong in the Southwest and the Southeast, where American is relatively weak.

Ray Neidl, an analyst with Maxim Group LLC, said US Airways would also add bring more aggressive management to the combined company, "which American would need to regain its proper place in the industry."

Why a deal doesn't make sense:
Others analysts believe that if American can reduce debt and labor costs ? including dumping pension obligations on the federal government ? it could thrive on its own.

American has a strong network of flights to Latin America, valuable international partners in British Airways and Japan Airlines, and a heavy presence in the five largest U.S. markets.

"US Airways needs American more than American needs US Airways," said Henry Harteveldt, a travel-industry analyst in San Francisco. "American could launch a hub in any US Airways city and capture a good bit of the corporate business."

Bethune said American can emerge from bankruptcy ready to join United and Delta in a Big Three. "They've got a great franchise, they've just got to get their costs in line. American can do it on a stand-alone basis. They certainly don't need" US Airways.

Then there's the labor issue, often one of the messiest in airline mergers. American and US Airways employees are represented by different unions, and both airlines have a history of trouble when combining workforces in previous acquisitions.

American's fate is in the hands of its creditors and the bankruptcy judge. John Thomas, head of the aviation practice at L.E.K. Consulting, said American would be more valuable to creditors if it's broken up ? the Latin American routes, the frequent-flier program, major hubs and the American Eagle regional-flying affiliate could all be sold separately.

What it means to the industry:
More consolidation would reduce competition and likely lead to higher fares for consumers. This would help airline profits, but the companies might benefit even if American and US Airways remain independent.

American is already considering how to reduce its size. New CEO Thomas Horton said Tuesday that the airline expects to make modest reductions in flying as it restructures in bankruptcy. Most analysts think the cuts will be bigger than Horton is signaling.

Jamie Baker, an analyst for J.P. Morgan, said airlines have consistently used bankruptcy to drop unprofitable routes.

"As the only loss-producing airline of size, AMR should have little difficulty in identifying where to cut," Baker said.

U. OREGON (US) ? A common cancer drug binds quickly and firmly to RNA, a finding that has the potential to open new targets for drug delivery with fewer toxic side effects, a new study shows.

Researchers have long known that cisplatin, a platinum compound used to fight tumors in nearly 70 percent of all human cancers, attaches to DNA, but its attachment to RNA was thought to be fleeting, says Victoria J. DeRose, professor of bioinorganic chemistry, biophysical chemistry, and chemical biology at the University of Oregon, who decided to take a closer look due to recent discoveries of critical RNA-based cell processes.

?We?re looking at RNA as a new drug target,? she says. ?We think this is an important discovery because we know that RNA is very different in tumors than it is in regular healthy cells. We thought that the platinum would bind to RNA, but that the RNA would just degrade and the platinum would be shunted out of the cell.

?In fact, we found that the platinum was retained on the RNA and also bound quickly, being found on the RNA as fast as one hour after treatment.?

For the study published online in the journal ACS Chemical Biology, DeRose and colleagues applied cisplatin to rapidly dividing and RNA-rich yeast cells (Saccharomyces cerevisiae, a much-used eukaryotic model organism in biology). The DNA and RNA were then extracted from the treated cells and the researchers studied the density of platinum per nucleotide with mass spectrometry.

Specific locations of the metal ions were further hunted down with detailed sequencing methods. The researchers found that the platinum was two to three times denser on DNA but there was a much higher whole-cell concentration on RNA. Moreover, the drug bound like glue to specific sections of RNA.

?Can this drug be made to be more or less reactive to specific RNAs?? DeRose asks. ?Might we be able to go after these new targets and thereby reduce the drug?s toxicity??

While cisplatin is effective in reducing tumor size, its use often is halted because of toxicity issues, including renal insufficiency, tinnitus, anemia, gastrointestinal problems, and nerve damage.

RNA?s roles have come under intense scrutiny since completion of the human genome opened new windows on DNA. It had been assumed that RNA was simply a messenger that coded for protein activity. New technologies, DeRose says, have shown that a vast amount of RNA performs an amazing level of different functions in gene expression, controlling it in specific ways during development or disease, particularly in cancer cells.

For the study, DeRose?s team only explored cisplatin?s binding on two forms of RNA: ribosomes, where the highest concentration of the drug was found; and messenger RNA. There are more areas to be looked at, says DeRose, whose group initially developed experience using and mapping platinum?s activity as a mimic for other metals in her research on RNA enzymes.

DeRose is now planning work with colleague Hui Zong, a biologist studying how cancer emerges, to extend the research into mouse cells to see if the findings in yeast RNA hold up.

An additional collaboration with chemist Michael Haley involves the creation of new platinum-based drugs with ?reaction handles? that will allow researchers to easily pull the experimental drugs out of cells, while still attached to their biological targets.

The research was funded in part by the National Institutes of Health.

FLEX-ible insight into flame behavior

ScienceDaily (Nov. 29, 2011) ? Whether free-burning or smoldering, uncontrolled fire can threaten life and destroy property. On Earth, a little water, maybe some chemicals, and the fire is smothered.

In space, where there is no up or down, flames behave in unconventional ways. And when your entire world is the size of a five-bedroom home like the International Space Station, putting out even a small fire quickly is a life-and-death matter.

Since March 2009, NASA's Flame Extinguishment Experiment, or FLEX, has conducted more than 200 tests to better understand the fundamentals of flames and how best to suppress fire in space. The investigation is currently ongoing aboard the space station.

"We hope to gain a better knowledge of droplet burning, improved spacecraft fire safety and ideas for more efficient utilization of liquid fuels on earth," Principal Investigator Forman Williams, University of California, San Diego, said. "The experiments will be used to verify numerical models that calculate droplet burning under different conditions."

When a flame burns on Earth, heated gases rise from the fire creating a buoyant flow that draws oxygen into the flame and combustion products away from it. In space, warm gases do not rise, and molecular diffusion drives flame behavior.

"In space molecular diffusion draws oxygen to the flame and combustion products away from the flame at a rate 100x slower than the buoyant flow on Earth," Dan Dietrich, project scientist, NASA's Glenn Research Center, said.

Flames in space burn with a lower temperature, at a lower rate, and with less oxygen than in normal gravity. This means that materials used to extinguish the fire must be present in higher concentrations. The slow flow of air from the fans mixing the air in a spacecraft can make the flames burn even faster.

To help understand how flames behave and burn in space, FLEX researchers ignite a small drop of either heptane or methanol. As this little sphere of fuel burns for about 20 seconds, it is engulfed by a spherically symmetric flame. The droplet shrinks until either the flame extinguishes or the fuel runs out.

"Thus far the most surprising thing we've observed is continued apparent burning of heptane droplets after flame extinction under certain conditions; currently, this is entirely unexplained," said Williams, who has studied combustion for more than 50 years.

From ignition to extinguishment, the entire event is recorded by cameras housed in the NASA Glenn-designed-and-built Combustion Integrated Rack, or CIR, which is located inside the U.S. Destiny Laboratory module of the space station.

"You have both elements being represented in the FLEX experiment. Both the exploration-driven fire safety research and the more fundamental science research," Dietrich said.

As for the fundamental science of combustion, there are still many discoveries to be made, even for an experienced professor who has studied the subject since college.

"As a Princeton undergrad, I saw in a graduate course the conservation equations of combustion and realized that those equations were complex enough to occupy me for the rest of my life; they contained so much interesting physics," Williams said. "There are many currently unknown things about combustion processes waiting to be revealed by future scientific experiments."

The better we understand the physics of combustion, the better we can control it and design energy-efficient processes.
