Tennis Elbow Exercises ? Regain Full Use of Your Arm

Tennis elbow exercises are widely acknowledged to be the best way of getting relief from this very painful condition. If you use your arm to do certain repetitive movements then your elbow is certain to get inflamed. This will result in a great deal of soreness and pain on the area of the upper arm near the elbow. Interestingly, while tennis elbow is a common condition affecting tennis players, it can also affect cooks, construction workers and even office workers who have to make repetitive movements with the tools of their trade.

One way of dealing with this problem is avoiding the activity that causes it. However, this is not always possible since people?s livelihoods are connected with it. A doctor might suggest treatment by a physiotherapist or even the use of a special brace to hold the arm in place. In extreme cases a doctor might even prescribe injections of cortisone to help control the inflammation. The problem is that these methods cost a lot of money. If they don?t work you might even have to go in for surgery.

You?ll be able to get your arm in good condition without having to spend a lot of money if you do the right tennis elbow exercises instead. These exercises are surprisingly easy to do and you will be able to get your elbow in good condition within a reasonably short time.

- Wrist extensions: Get a firm grip on a weight whilst supporting your forearm on a table or bench. Hold the weight with your palm facing downwards. Move your wrists upwards and downwards. This exercise will strengthen the wrist as well as the muscles of the forearm.

- Forearm extensions 2: Once more hold a weight in your hand whilst supporting your forearm on a table. Hold the weight with the palm facing downwards. Curl your wrist and bring the weight towards you.

- Elbow stretching exercises: Try and extend the elbow as much as possible without stretching the arm unduly. Gradually increase the degree by which the arm can be stretched.

Be very careful when doing these tennis elbow exercises or else you might inadvertently hurt your arm more. Do not use very heavy weights when doing these exercises and make sure that you stop exercising as soon as you feel any sort of discomfort. Regular exercise will increase the flexibility and strength of your elbow and ensure that no additional problems ensue.

Find out how you can strengthen your arms including your elbows with the help of the right tennis elbow exercises. Do these exercises regularly in order to cure inflammation of your elbow and prevent further painful problems.

You're far less in control of your brain than you think, study finds

EVANSTON, Ill. --- You've probably never given much thought to the fact that picking up your cup of morning coffee presents your brain with a set of complex decisions. You need to decide how to aim your hand, grasp the handle and raise the cup to your mouth, all without spilling the contents on your lap.

A new Northwestern University study shows that, not only does your brain handle such complex decisions for you, it also hides information from you about how those decisions are made.

"Our study gives a salient example," said Yangqing 'Lucie' Xu, lead author of the study and a doctoral candidate in psychology at Northwestern. "When you pick up an object, your brain automatically decides how to control your muscles based on what your eyes provide about the object's shape. When you pick up a mug by the handle with your right hand, you need to add a clockwise twist to your grip to compensate for the extra weight that you see on the left side of the mug.

"We showed that the use of this visual information is so powerful and automatic that we cannot turn it off. When people see an object weighted in one direction, they actually can't help but 'feel' the weight in that direction, even when they know that we're tricking them," Xu said.

The researchers conducted two experiments. In the first, people were asked to grasp a vertical stick with a weight hanging from its left or right side. People easily reported which side they felt the weight was on, even when they had their eyes closed.

The researchers then used a set of mirrors to occasionally flip the view of the object so that it looked like the weight was on the left, when actually it was on the right. And although people were told to report on which side they felt the weight (with their hands), the visual image strongly influenced the direction that they felt the weight was coming from, especially when the weights were lighter.

In the second experiment, the researchers tried harder to convince people to ignore the visual information by carefully explaining the nature of the "trick."

"People still could not ignore the visual information," said Xu. "In fact, the effect even works on us, and we designed the experiment!"

Steven Franconeri, co-author of the study and associate professor of cognitive psychology at Northwestern, said the brain is constantly making decisions for us that we don't know about or understand.

"These decisions are usually smart and based on vast experience," he said. "In this study's example, your brain is automatically using visual information to tell your hands what they are feeling. We can show that these decisions are happening by manipulating the information your brain receives -- we mirror-reverse the visual information and your brain now tells your hands that they are feeling the reverse of what they are actually feeling. This inference is mandatory -- you feel it even if you know it's not true."

Franconeri said this is not a "bug" in the brain's operation.

"In the vast majority of cases, you want to 'delegate' decisions like this to the unconscious parts of your brain, leaving you free to focus on less straightforward problems, like following driving directions or enjoying your cup of coffee."

Rebel Wilson Talks Pitch Perfect

rebel wilson pitch perfect

The hilarious new comedy Pitch Perfect, from director Jason Moore (Broadway?s Avenue Q) and screenwriter Kay Cannon (New Girl, 30 Rock), tells the story of Beca (Anna Kendrick), a young woman who dreams of being a music producer, but who instead finds herself at Barden University in an all-female a cappella singing group. With both new takes on old favorites and hits of right now, The Bellas fight to climb their way to the top of the cutthroat world of college music competitions. The film also stars Rebel Wilson, Skylar Astin, Adam Devine, Anna Camp, Brittany Snow, John Michael Higgins and Elizabeth Banks.

At the film?s press junket, the incredibly funny Aussie actress Rebel Wilson, who plays the super-confident Fat Amy, talked about how getting the role in Bridesmaids (her first American job) changed things for her, how she sang the Lady Gaga song ?Edge of Glory? for her Pitch Perfect audition, that she got to do a lot of improvising on set, just how outrageous things got between her and co-star Adam Devine (who plays the self-obsessed lead singer of rival group The Treblemakers), and her favorite song to sing in the film. She also talked about how she went from being a junior handler at dog shows in Australia to an actress, some crazy experiences she had in the theater (one of which included her actually falling off of the roof, in Fiddler on the Roof), how she?s just starting to be able to enjoy all of her current success, and that she?s developing a TV show for ABC, called Super Fun Night. Check out what she had to say after the jump.

Question: How did getting the role in Bridesmaids change things for you?

rebel-wilson-pitch-perfect-imageREBEL WILSON: Bridesmaids was my first job here. I was so close to getting a couple of movies, and I?m so glad that it was Bridesmaids that was the first one. I went in and improvised for them, with Kristen Wiig, for an hour in a room. Judd Apatow said, ?Tell Kristen about your love life. Go!,? and I said, ?But, I?ve prepared the script.? And I just kept going for an hour while they filmed it all. I went for Melissa McCarthy?s role, but I was a bit too young for that. But, they really liked my audition, and so they added me as the roommate. There was never a female roommate in the script. They just added it in because they liked my audition. And then, of course, when that movie came out last year, it was just like, ?Bang!? I booked five movies within a week or two, and Pitch Perfect was one of them. I was the first person to be cast in Pitch Perfect. Because it was such a specific role, I was cast months before anyone else. (Screenwriter) Kay [Cannon] actually Facebooked me and she said, ?Hey, I?ve written this script.? Sometimes on Facebook, you?re like, ?Is this serious?!? But, she said she?d really like me to read the script and consider Fat Amy. I had actually played a character in Australia called Fat Mandy, so I was like, ?Yeah, I have experience! I could totally do that!? And then, when I read the script, I was like, ?This is so funny!,? and I knew I had to do it.

Did you have to sing for the audition?

pitch-perfect-movie-posterWILSON: Yeah, so I sang Lady Gaga?s ?Edge of Glory? for Jason Moore, and I did my own body percussion. You sing the melody over the top of your own beat, so I did that. I learned that when I played basketball in high school and we used to do chants with our own beat, just on the court. I was like, ?If I?ve gotta sing a cappella, at least I?ll have my own little beat that I can groove to.? Anna Kendrick does something similar in the movie with the cups. So, Jason was like, ?Yeah, you can be in the movie!? I just had a feeling about it. Even though it technically was a small movie, I just had a feeling it was going to be really popular and super fun.

Was there much improvising during filming?

WILSON: Yeah! Adam Devine, who plays opposite me, is a great improviser as well, so when we were on set together, they had hours and hours of footage of us, just saying shit to each other. It was good. But, Kay had written such a good character. Originally, I was going to be American in the movie, but then we had four weeks of rehearsals before we shot the film and, when I do American movies, I?m American the whole time. But, because we were singing and dancing for 10 hours a day, I couldn?t keep it up. I slipped and started talking [in my own accent], and Jason heard me and was like, ?I want you to use your real voice in the movie.? I was like, ?No, I don?t want to do my own voice. I want to be an actor and do acting!? But, he was like, ?No, I?ve got a feeling that it?s going to be good.? So, when I was on set, I?d just improvise stuff to make it all fit in.

Did you and Adam Devine ever get really mean with each other?

WILSON: It?s not in the movie, but Adam touched my breast in an improvisation. Normally, if you?re going to touch another actor, you tell them before, but we were just going crazy. So then, I actually touched [his crotch]. I said a joke, and then [touched him]. He was like, ?Woah!,? because he didn?t expect that. It was like 4 am, in the morning, and it was freezing cold. We had to entertain ourselves, and I like to keep it fresh for each take. With that take, we did go a little far, but it was all good. We were still having fun.

Which was your favorite song to sing in the movie?

pitch-perfect-image-rebel-wilsonWILSON: I liked it when I got to do the solo in ?Turn the Beat Around.? That note I sing is really high, and I had to hold it for a really long time.

Did you grow up doing theater?

WILSON: No, I wasn?t a child actor, or anything. My family was in dog showing with Beagles, so that?s what I was forced to do. So, I was forced to be a junior handler, which is kind of like Toddlers & Tiaras ?cause you are dressed up in little outfits, and you run around with the dogs and show them. The weird thing is that you win not very much money. You win $50 or a plastic jug, but you don?t win that good of stuff, and yet you have to get up really early and bring all the dogs and equipment to the dog show. I love watching Toddlers & Tiaras ?cause I?m like, ?That was kind of like my life, but with dogs.?

Have you seen Best in Show?

WILSON: Yeah, and when I saw that, I was like, ?This is like my life!? I said, ?This is a really accurate documentary.? Some people are like, ?Oh, that?s so wild!? I grew up with people who act like that, but just the Australian version of it. They were like that. They were so weird and so obsessed with their dogs and wore weird stuff. Sometimes people ask me, ?Where do you get some of your characters from?,? and they?re from my crazy upbringing.

How did you get into acting, then?

anna-kendrick-rebel-wilson-pitch-perfectWILSON: I remember, when I was in high school, I did do some high school musicals. I did Grease, and we did Fiddler on the Roof. My story from that is that I fell from the roof, doing Fiddler on the Roof, and almost killed myself. It was very bad. It was a miracle I didn?t die. I sprained all my ribs and my wrist. My love for musical theater was so strong that I came back the next night and performed. I was Fruma-Sarah, which wasn?t a main character. She was the grandma who comes down from Heaven, which is why I was on the roof. I came out of a coffin and the coffin was supposed to land on stage, but there were some technical difficulties. No one told me the coffin hadn?t landed, and I just jumped out on my cue and I was two stories high. You couldn?t really tell, when you were inside the coffin, if you were on the ground or not, so I just jumped out and went straight down. The whole audience had one of those really deadly silences. And then, I became notorious at my school for that.

But then, when I finished high school, I was a youth ambassador for Australia. I just didn?t think I would be an actor, or anything. I got malaria, really badly. During that time, when I was in intensive care, I had this hallucination that I was an actress and that I was really, really good. It was so strong that when I came out of hospital, I started saying, ?I?m going to be an actress. I?m going to go back to Australia and do it.? People thought I was crazy. They thought the disease had really affected me and made me crazy mad. And I said, ?No, I?ve just got a feeling I could be really good.? My whole family was like, ?No, no one is going to pick you for movies.? But I was like, ?One day, they will!? So, I enrolled in a theater school in Australia, called The Australian Theatre for Young People, where Nicole Kidman and Toni Collette and lots of our great actresses and actors went.

pitch perfect anna camp rebel wilsonOne of the first things that I was in, at that theater school, was a musical. I remember, very clearly, that I was in the chorus and they made me stand right at the back of the stage because I pulled focus. They kept saying, ?People just look at you. You?re not a lead role. They can?t look at you.? So, I was forced to stand at the back of the stage, in the darkness. Sometimes I even had to turn around and face away because, for some reason, and I don?t know what it is, they said I pulled focus and that I was distracting from the real people playing the real characters. And then, I remember that I cried. I was just trying to give really good energy and be really passionate when I sang. It?s funny how it happens. Weirdly, that weird skill then makes you become famous and popular.

Since you?ve been working non-stop since Bridesmaids, have you gotten a chance to enjoy success and the perks that come with it?

rebel-wilsonWILSON: It?s starting to get really crazy! For example, I?ve had no sleep and just flew in from Australia. There are just weird things that happen now. I was at the MTV VMAs, sitting with Rihanna and Katy Perry, and they knew my name. You just don?t think that will happen to you. Also, I work as a writer, as well. Usually, if I?m not acting, I?m working on the development stuff, down at Warner Bros. where I?m working on a TV show.

What is the TV show you?re developing?

WILSON: It?s called Super Fun Night, for ABC. It?s about three girls in New York.

Pitch Perfect opens in limited release on September 28th, and in wide release on October 5th.

Clemson gets schooled 49-37 by No. 4 Florida State

Florida State took Clemson to apart and Tigers coach Dabo Swinney is hoping his players can at least come away with a lesson learned.

The fourth-ranked Seminoles rolled up 667 yards of total offense and scored 35 second-half points to erase No. 10 Clemson's seven-point halftime lead on their way to a 49-37 victory Saturday night.

"We just didn't play four quarters," Swinney said. "It's a great game for us to grow and learn from. There's a lot of football left. Certainly we've got a lot of improving to do."

Florida State's EJ Manuel threw for a career-high 380 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another 102 yards in the biggest Atlantic Coast Conference game in years.

Chris Thompson ran for 103 yards and two scores and James Wilder Jr. added two touchdowns runs for the Seminoles (4-0, 2-0).

"We couldn't stop the run," Swinney said. "Our team, I thought they fought hard, but again, right there at the end the momentum change late in the third quarter going into the fourth quarter we just weren't able to turn it back."

Clemson (3-1, 0-1) built a 28-14 lead early in the third quarter on a 52-yard pass from All-American receiver Sammy Watkins to Andre Ellington.

Swinney said the turning point was Lamarcus Joyner's 90-yard kickoff return after Clemson's Chandler Catanzaro kicked a 50-year field goal to put the Tigers up 31-21.

Joyner was tackled at the Clemson 10 and the Seminoles scored two plays later on a 9-yard Manuel pass to Rashad Greene, narrowing the Tigers' lead to three just before the third quarter ended.

"The kickoff return was huge - just a huge momentum swing in the game," Swinney said. "It kind of lit a fire for them over there."

Florida State trailed until late in the third quarter, taking its first lead at 35-31 on Manuel's 29-yard touchdown pass to Rodney Smith. The Seminoles, then built a 49-31 lead before Clemson scored late.

"Our offense is all about getting in the rhythm," Clemson center Dalton Freeman said. "Early on, we were firing on all cylinders. We were able to execute on some big plays. But as the game went on, we sputtered a little bit."

The two teams combined for 1,093 yards offense as Clemson put up 426 yards against the nation's top-ranked defense.

"They're No. 1 in the nation for a reason," Freeman said. "We will draw some confidence from the good things, but we have to go back and correct some of the mistakes."

The Tigers visit Boston College next Saturday.

Clemson needed just 86 seconds to reach the end zone as DeAndre Hopkins blew past Florida State safety Terrence Brooks on a 60-yard scoring bomb from Boyd - the first touchdown scored against the Seminole defense this season. But more were to come.

A trick play set up Clemson's second TD, a 6-yard run by Andre Ellington. Darrell Smith got a yard on a shovel pass from holder Spencer Benton on a fake field goal from the Florida State 15 two plays earlier.

Yet another trick play gave Clemson its 28-14 lead when Watkins took a lateral from Tajh Boyd and then threw back across the field to Ellington on a 52-yard scoring play. Although Watkins had 109 all-purpose yards, he was kept out of the end zone.

Who?s Sabotaging Iran?s Nukes?

The chief of Iran?s nuclear program?says the power lines to his nuclear facilities were sabotaged. U.S. Special Forces have trained for operations inside Iran for years. Do these latest disclosures suggest they are already on the ground?

On Monday, Fereydoun Abbasi, Iran?s vice president and the chief of its nuclear-energy agency, disclosed that power lines between the holy city of Qom and the underground?Fordow nuclear centrifuge facility were blown up?with explosives on Aug. 17. He also said the power lines leading to Iran?s Natanz facilities were blown up as well. On the day after the power was cut off at Fordow, an inspector from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) asked to visit the facility.

READ MORE Rebels Capture Key Turkish Post

?It should be recalled that power cut off is one of the ways to break down centrifuge?machines,??Abbasi said, according to a copy of his prepared remarks to the IAEA on Monday. ?Then during the early hours of next morning an agency inspector requested to conduct an unannounced inspection. Does this visit have any connection to that detonation??

In recent years, the West?s stealth war on Iran?s nuclear program has been waged through sabotage, industrial explosions, cyberviruses, and targeted killings. But until recently elements of the country?s civilian infrastructure were off limits in this not-so-secret shadow war.?

READ MORE Software Mogul Enters S. Korea Election

The disclosure is significant. To start, it is the first piece of evidence to suggest opponents of the Iranian program are targeting the country?s electrical grid and doing so on the ground. The U.S. military has studied Iran?s infrastructure closely. In 2009, a research lab attached to the U.S. joint staff and combatant commands known as the Joint Warfare Analysis Center discovered a weakness in Iran?s electrical grids that at the time would make it vulnerable to a cyberattack.

The attack described by Abbasi suggests, however, a physical explosion as opposed to a cyberattack. He specifically said the power lines from Qom to the Shahid Ali Mohammadi complex at Fordow ?were cut using explosives.? In this case, special-operations forces on the ground in Iran would carry out such an attack, as opposed to cyberwarriors half a world away.?

READ MORE Drug Kingpin ?El Loco? Busted

A retired U.S. intelligence officer who still works as a contractor with the U.S. military on operations with regard to Iran told The Daily Beast that U.S. Special Forces have trained for sabotage missions inside Iran for years. ?From the first reports, this attack looks like something from our guys,? this source said. This former official also said U.S. Special Forces conducted a series of targeted attacks on Iran?s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in late 2011 as the U.S. military was exiting Iraq. That stealth offensive is widely credited with stopping Iran from attacking U.S. forces as they left Iraq.

If the United States conducted the sabotage of Iran?s power lines, it may help ease concerns from Israel?s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Last week a private disagreement between Netanyahu and President Obama went public when the Israeli leader chastised Western countries for failing to set red lines for Iran, beyond which there would be a military strike. While at times Israel and the United States have disagreed on Iran policy, the intelligence services of the two countries continue to cooperate on efforts to sabotage the program.

READ MORE Xi Jinping, Panetta Shake Hands

Patrick Clawson, the director of research for the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, said,??Covert American operations against the Iranian program is a good way to persuade the Israelis that the United States will back up its words with deeds.? Spokesmen for the National Security Council, the CIA, and the IAEA all declined to comment on Abbasi?s disclosure.

Overall the shadow war against Iran?s nuclear program is one reason some top national-security officials in Israel have said they have more time. Meir Dagan, the chief of Israel?s?Mossad between 2002 and 2010, said in an interview aired by CBS?s?60 Minutes?in March that bombing Iran would be the ?stupidest idea? he?d ever heard. Dagan said other measures conducted by Israel and the United States, which he did not elaborate on, had done enough to delay Iran?s quest for a nuclear weapon.

READ MORE French Mag Prints Muhammed Cartoons

But it?s unclear whether the sabotage by Western spies is still working. Abbasi in his speech, for example, said Iran was now taking countermeasures to protect its scientists. He said Iran?s nuclear facilities have become better at spotting cyberattacks.

Whether a cutoff in the power supply is successful depends on whether the nuclear facility has a backup power supply. Robert Avagyan, a research analyst at the Institute for Science and International Security, said, ?If a cutoff of power is aimed at the centrifuges, it would be aimed at slowing down the centrifuge. Sudden changes of spinning speed can cause severe damage to the centrifuge. But this kind of attack would not be effective if there was a backup power source that prevents such a power cutoff.??

READ MORE Italy?s Culture Falls to Ruins

The latest IAEA reports paints a mixed picture on the success of Iran?s nuclear program. On the one hand, Iran has yet to install the advanced centrifuges it has been developing for at least 10 years. The latest report says the centrifuges it has installed at the Fordow facility are still based on the 1970s-era model first stolen by Pakistani nuclear scientist, A.Q. Khan.

At least in his presentation to the IAEA, Abbasi said Iran?s program was resilient in the face of sabotage. He said, ?Plotters of attack against Iran?s nuclear facilities have realized, through the IAEA published reports, that they have not gained any success in this regard.?

Apple iCloud adds iOS-style notification bar, Notes and Reminders web apps

Apple iCloud adds iOSstyle notification bar, Notes and Reminders

The iCloud's web interface has been updated with a new drop-down notification bar. Alongside badge notifications, it offers up browser-based notifications across Mail, Calendar, Reminders and Find My Phone -- which still remains powered by Google Maps, for now. An earlier update also bundled Notes and reminders into the web app, both mimicking the looks of their iPad versions. Now we just need a big enough reason to keep iCloud's site constantly open.

FBI: Operation tracking Chicago teen took months

HILLSIDE, Ill. (AP) ? The investigation started months ago, when the FBI noticed an email message: A man in the Chicago suburbs was using an account to distribute chatter about violent jihad and the killing of Americans.

Two undercover agents reached out and began to talk to him online. In May, they introduced him to another agent who claimed to be a terrorist living in New York.

The operation ended Friday night, an affidavit describing it says, when the man was arrested and accused of trying to detonate what he believed was a car bomb outside of a Chicago bar. Prosecutors said an undercover agent gave Adel Daoud, a U.S. citizen from the Chicago suburb of Hillside, a phony car bomb and watched him press the trigger.

The U.S. Attorney's Office in Chicago, which announced the arrest Saturday, said the device was harmless and the public was never at risk. Daoud, 18, is due to make an appearance in federal court Monday afternoon on charges of attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction and attempting to damage and destroy a building with an explosive.

"We don't even know anything. We don't know that much. We know as little as you do," a woman who answered the phone at his home and identified herself as his sister, Hiba, said Saturday. "They're just accusations. ... We'd like to be left alone."

Daoud's father, Ahmed Daoud, declined to comment on Sunday.

"We don't know anything about it," he said when reached by phone.

The FBI often uses similar tactics in counterterrorism investigations, deploying undercover agents to engage suspects in talk of terror plots and then provide fake explosive devices.

In 2010, a Lebanese immigrant took what he thought was a bomb and dropped it into a trash bin near Chicago's Wrigley Field. In a 2009 case, agents provided a Jordanian man with a fake truck bomb that he used to try to blow up a 60-story office tower in Dallas.

This operation unfolded much like the others. After Daoud began talking to the undercover agents, an affidavit says, the third agent and Daoud met six times in the suburb of Villa Park over the summer and exchanged messages. Daoud then set about identifying 29 potential targets, including military recruiting centers, bars, malls and tourist attractions in Chicago, the document said.

After he settled on a downtown bar, he conducted surveillance on it by using Google Street View and visiting the area in person to take photographs, the affidavit said. The document does not identify the bar, but says he told the agent it was also a concert venue by a liquor store.

"It's a bar, it's a liquor store, it's a concert. All in one bundle," the document quotes him as saying. It said he noted the bar would be filled with the "evilest people ... kuffars." Kuffar is the Arabic term for non-believer.

Shortly after 7 p.m. Friday, the affidavit said, Daoud met with the undercover agent in Villa Park and they drove to downtown Chicago, where the restaurants and bars were packed. They entered a parking lot where a Jeep Cherokee containing the phony bomb was parked, the document says.

Daoud drove the vehicle and parked it in front of the bar, then walked a block away and attempted to detonate the device by pressing a triggering mechanism, the affidavit says. He was then arrested.

A neighbor, Harry Pappas, said that a dozen unmarked cars drove up to the family's house on Friday night and several agents went inside. On Saturday, no one answered the door of the family's two-story home, which had a well-kept garden in the yard and a basketball hoop in the driveway. The house faces a Lutheran church; a Greek Orthodox church also is nearby.

Pappas said he was shocked by the arrest, calling Daoud's parents "wonderful" people.

Prosecutors said Daoud was offered several chances to change his mind and walk away from the plot.

The affidavit said Daoud was active in jihadist Internet forums and was accessing articles written by Anwar al-Awlaki, the U.S.-born radical cleric who became a key figure in the Yemen-based al-Qaida offshoot known as al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula.

Al-Awlaki was killed in a U.S. drone strike in Yemen last year.

The FBI says he also was searching online for information on making bombs and reading "Inspire," the English-language online magazine published by Al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula.

In his conversations with the undercover agent, Daoud explained his reasons for wanting to launch an attack, saying the United States was at war "with Islam and Muslims," the affidavit said.

According to the document, he said he was trying to recruit others and that he was confronted by leaders of his mosque who warned he should stop talking about jihad. The affidavit said Daoud's father also had been informed that Daoud was debating jihad and told Daoud to stop talking about it.

Daoud also told the agent he wanted an attack that would kill many people, the document said.

"I want something that's gonna make it in the news," he said, according to the affidavit. "I want to get to like, for me I want to get the most evil place, but I want to get a more populated place."

Crows believe in AFL upset: coach

Adelaide fancy their chances of upsetting AFL flag favourites Hawthorn in next Saturday's preliminary final, Crows coach Brenton Sanderson says.

The Crows pipped Fremantle by 10 points in Friday night's semi-final to set up a MCG meeting with the Hawks.

Adelaide enter the fixture rank outsiders to advance to the grand final - a scenario which suits Sanderson.

"The belief has always been there," Sanderson said after the Crows ended Fremantle's season with a 12.9 (81) to 11.5 (75) triumph at AAMI Stadium.

"The doubt comes externally.

"I have got tremendous belief in our playing group.

"And the assistant coaches have been fantastic this week in reminding our players that their best is good enough.

"We will certainly have to be at our best next week.

"Hawthorn, with the week off, in Melbourne - we'll certainly be the underdogs.

"But we'll certainly go over there really confident after our second half," he said, referring to Adelaide outscoring the Dockers eight goals to four after halftime in the semi-final.

The comeback victory ensured the Crows avoided becoming the first club in 15 years to finish second and exit the finals with consecutive finals losses, but Sanderson cautioned against overly celebrating the win.

"It's important we understand we have just won a semi-final and that puts us in a position to play in a prelim," he said.

"So you enjoy it, we review it, and then we get on with our next opponent.

"The season's not over for us.

"As happy as we feel now and as relieved as we feel it's important to get back to business now, recover well, review, and we'll get on with the Hawks as soon as we can."

States that have lost the most jobs to China

?

Reuters file

A recent report says 2.7 million U.S. jobs were lost to China between 2001 and 2011, and many of those were in the textile industry.

By Douglas A. McIntyre and Samuel Weigley, 24/7 Wall St.

Debate over how many jobs the United States loses to China has gone on for years. Today, China is one of the two largest manufacturing economies in the world. The other is the United States. Many labor groups and politicians are?trying to tip factory activity back to the U.S. ? a difficult task to accomplish when companies send work to China to bring labor costs down. So, in many cases, China cannot be blamed for the shift in workers.

24/7 Wall St.: America's disappearing jobs

In a recent study, the Economic Policy Institute analyzed American jobs lost to China between 2001 and 2011. During that time, ?the trade deficit with China eliminated or displaced more than 2.7 million U.S. jobs,?over?2.1 million of which were in manufacturing,? according to the report. Based on the study, 24/7 Wall St. identified the 10 states that experienced the most job loss as a result of the deficit between 2001 and 2011.

Some industries were affected more than others. Between 2001 and 2011, the U.S. trade deficit with China grew $217.5 billion, with U.S. imports of computer and electronic parts, including computer, semiconductors and audio-video equipment, making up 55 percent of the total. Of the 2.1 million manufacturing jobs lost, more than 1 million were?in the computer and electronic products category.

As a result, many of the states that lost the most jobs have congressional districts with high concentrations of technology jobs. According to the report, states like California and Texas have congressional districts with heavy focus on tech. Four of the five congressional districts with the highest proportional decline ? California?s 13th, 14th, 15th and 16th ? are in the tech-heavy San Francisco Bay Area. The other is Texas? 31st district, which forms part of Austin, also home to many of the nation?s largest technology companies.

Districts in some states, including Georgia and Alabama, ?were especially hard-hit by job displacement in a variety of manufacturing industries, including computers and electronic products, textiles and apparel, and furniture,? according to the institute. Out of the country?s 435 congressional districts, Georgia?s 9th District is among the top 25 for job loss. The district includes the city of Dalton, which is home to manufacturers, including many prominent upholstery corporations.

Despite the talk of a manufacturing resurgence, Robert Scott, the author of the?institute's?study, calls this ?hot air.? He notes that 50,000 manufacturing facilities have been closed since 2001 with very few coming back anytime soon. He suggests the only way to get a manufacturing resurgence off the ground is for the federal government to crack down on China?s currency manipulation and to get American companies to truly invest in manufacturing. ?There is a lack of willingness to put that in place,? Scott said. ?Standing by and hoping manufacturing is going to get better isn?t going to work.?

24/7 Wall St. identified the states losing the most jobs to China based on the Economic Policy Institute report, ?The China Toll.??To reflect how much the trade deficit has affected state and local economies, we considered states that lost the most jobs relative to the population. On this basis, small states like New Hampshire and Vermont have been just as hurt when worker migration is compared to total jobs in each state. 24/7 Wall St. also reviewed the level of export activity and job losses in the 50 states and 435 congressional districts relative to the number of people employed by state. The relative growth rate of gross domestic product for each state for 2011 and between 2008 and 2011 is based on data from the?institute's report. The July 2012 unemployment rate by state is from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

24/7 Wall St.: America's most hated industries

What emerges from these figures is that the shift of jobs to China does not spare any state based on its unemployment rate or GDP growth. Nor does it spare any single industry or sector, from technology to shoe making. China?s ability to take jobs from the U.S. stretches across nearly every aspect of the American economy.

These are the 10 states losing the most jobs to China.

1. New Hampshire

  • ?Percent jobs lost: 2.94 percent
  • ?Unemployment rate: 5.4 percent (seventh lowest)
  • ?GDP growth: 1.5 percent (18th highest)

Growth in New Hampshire exports to China has grown at a whopping rate of 1,032 percent between 2000 and 2011, according to the U.S.-China Business Council. During the same time frame, exports to the rest of the world have grown by just 69 percent. Seems that some companies in New Hampshire have decided that making products in China would be more efficient than exporting ? almost 3 percent of the state?s jobs between 2001 and 2011 have been moved there. Fortunately, New Hampshire?s economy was stronger than most state economies. The unemployment rate of 5.4 percent, the seventh lowest in the United States, was almost three percentage points lower than the national rate. Between 2008 and 2011, GDP has grown by 3.89 percent, which places New Hampshire in the top 10 states in terms of GDP growth.

2. California

  • ?Percent jobs lost: 2.87 percent
  • ?Unemployment rate: 10.7 percent (third highest)
  • ?GDP growth: 2 percent (11th highest)

Four of the five congressional districts (of the 435 examined) with the most jobs lost are based in the Bay Area of California, home to many of America?s largest technology corporations. According to the?San Francisco Chronicle, executives of California companies point to ?strict environmental regulations and high taxes and labor costs? as barriers for bringing jobs back to the U.S. This comes at a time when the economy of America?s most populous state is struggling ? the 10.7 percent unemployment rate in California was the third highest in the country in July. Between 2008 and 2011, California?s GDP has declined by $20.75 billion, far larger than any other state.

24/7 Wall St.: American cities adding the most jobs

3. Massachusetts

  • ?Percent jobs lost: 2.86 percent
  • ?Unemployment rate: 6.1 percent (12th lowest)
  • ?GDP growth: 2.2 percent (seventh highest)

President Obama and his campaign surrogates have claimed that Mitt Romney was heavily responsible for jobs being shipped overseas while the GOP candidate was governor of Massachusetts between 2003 and 2007. Factcheck.org notes that jobs did in fact go overseas during Romney?s time in office; however, the rate of job loss during that time actually was less compared to the four years before and after he was in office.

Two congressional districts in Massachusetts were in the top 10 in the country for jobs lost. Massachusetts 5th Congressional District shipped 17,200 jobs to China between 2001 and 2011, which amounts to 5.42 percent of the district?s current employment of 317,400. The largest city in the district is Lowell, known for its manufacturing base. Massachusetts 3rd District, which contains the state?s second-largest city of Worcester, has shipped 15,500 jobs overseas, which amounts to 4.8 percent of the current employment of 322,800 in the district.

4. Oregon

  • ?Percent jobs lost: 2.85 percent
  • ?Unemployment rate: ?8.7 percent (13th highest)
  • ?GDP growth: 4.7 percent (second highest)

Oregon?s 1st Congressional District was hit the hardest by jobs moving to China. In 10 years, 21,100 jobs have been sent to China, which is 5.44 percent of the 388,100 people currently employed in the district. The district includes Beaverton, home to Nike Inc.?s?headquarters. Nike has received substantial criticism over its outsourcing to China and its human rights record abroad. The good news for Oregon is that the economy is looking like it is making a turnaround. While the state?s unemployment was higher than the national rate, its GDP growth rate of 4.7 percent in 2011 was the second highest in the country that year. Between 2008 and 2011, GDP grew by 9.43 percent, which was higher than all but two states in the U.S.

5. North Carolina

  • ?Percent jobs lost: 2.67 percent
  • ?Unemployment rate: 9.6 percent (fifth highest)
  • ?GDP growth: 1.8 percent (15th highest)

The congressional district hit the hardest in North Carolina was the 4th, where North Carolina?s Research Triangle is located. The Research Triangle has been an East Coast version of Silicon Valley, with many large technology employers having a major presence in the region. Another sizable business where jobs have moved from the United States to China was furniture manufacturing. According to research from Duke University, High Point, N.C., is the ?Furniture Capital of the World,? but has been losing jobs to China since the 1990s.

We asked Lydia to share her SCORE small business success story.? Here?s what she had to say:

?I was an executive director of a non-profit organization and had decided that I wanted to start my own firm to provide marketing and fundraising services to non-profits.? I knew marketing and fundraising but did not have a clue about running my own business. I attended a SCORE presentation at Westchester Community College, and decided to contact SCORE and work with a small business coach.?

SCORE Westchester: Small Business Counseling That Works!

Our team of expert, experienced small business coaches can meet with you in our White Plains office ? usually with 2 counselors, or over the phone, via email, or on Skype. Their focus is on what it will take to make you successful, and all information is strictly confidential.? Here?s how that worked for Lydia:

?I decided to attend the weekly afternoon workshops. I chose to meet in person and was assigned a small business coach who helped me obtain a business certificate and create a business plan.? By January, I had my first client, followed by a second in early February.? By June, I had secured several clients, and I was working full-time.?

At SCORE Westchester, a small business coach is always available to help you get started and to provide ongoing support and guidance to promote ongoing success. Making the right decisions is essential. SCORE Westchester was able to provide Lydia with useful knowledge and advice and remained in her corner as long as she desired it. ?Over the years, I talked with my coach about expanding my home office or renting space, liability insurance, and many other issues.?

SCORE Westchester: Here to Make Your Westchester Business Dream a Success!

SCORE Westchester is here to help you realize your dream of successful small business ownership. Whatever help you need, we?ve got the expertise, guidance, and resources to help you to create a profitable business, and do so more quickly.
?If you have dreamed about owning your own business, have a unique idea or a skill that is marketable, are interested in learning new skills, and are willing to work hard to make that dream a reality, then contact SCORE to work with a small business coach.? They will help you to make your dream a reality.?

Terms of Service

There are a few ground rules for participation in LAGbook. Please respect these rules, and each other.

Be civil.

No personal attacks. Do not feel compelled to defend your honor in public.

Stay on topic in Forums.

Please pay attention to the topic of your messages, and check that it still relates to its parent. Off-topic discussion not taken to private email is eligible for removal.

Be kind to newcomers.

Newcomers may be annoying. But lots of valued contributors started out this way, and treating newcomers kindly makes them more likely to turn into the valuable community members we all know and love.
So while you don't have to humor them or suffer them gladly, and it's fine to point out when they make mistakes, point newcomers in the right direction in addition to turning them away from the wrong ones, and be kind to them in the process of correcting their transgressions.

Let sleeping dogs lie.

It's tempting to revisit controversial decisions you do not agree with, but it's rarely productive to do so, since it almost always results in the same heated, lengthy, and time/energy draining discussions leading to the same conclusion that was reached in the last round.
Therefore, for issues already raised, discussed, and decided upon, reopen the discussion only if you have significant new information that would reasonably prompt reconsideration of the original decision.

Ignore spammers.

Spam is a blight upon the face of the net. Nobody likes it. However, it is hard to avoid. Despite our best efforts, you will occasionally see spam on our site. However, don't forget that complaining about spam in public increases noise, but not signal. It may make you feel better, but it doesn't help.

Identify your subject matter.

Not everyone has time reading all forum and wiki postings. To ensure that your message reach the right people at timely manner, identify your subject matter clearly in the subject line. Subjects like a question and problem are not very helpful.

No unsubscribe messages.

Unfortunately, this bears repeating.

No test messages.

Please do not send test messages to the forum. You can, however, create test pages on the Wiki, but please don't forget to delete them after you finish learning.
