First edition Audubon book sells for $7.9 million (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? A full-size, complete first edition of John James Audubon's "The Birds of America" sold for $7.9 million at auction on Friday in New York to a private American collector, Christie's said.

The four-volume, bound "Duke of Portland" set of 435 hand-colored engravings in excellent condition and more than 3 feet (1 meter) in height is considered one of the most prized books of ornithological art ever produced.

Francis Wahlgren, Christie's international head of books and manuscripts, said the $7.9 million sale was the third highest price for a printed book at auction.

"This strong result for Audubon's masterpiece confirms its iconic status and now holds the top three auction records for printed books," he added.

Christie's said the book was purchased by William Henry Cavendish Cavendish-Scott-Bentinck, the fourth Duke of Portland sometime after 1838.

"Audubon's masterpiece 'The Birds of America' is possibly the highest achievement in ornithological art today," according to Christie's.

Book experts estimate that the entire first edition consisted of just 200 completed copies produced during an 11-year period. Christie's said 120 complete sets are known to exist with 107 in institutions and 13 in private hands.

Analyst: All These Concerns Over EA And Star Wars Are ?Overdone?

EA-LogoSo, there's been some hubbub around Electronic Arts over the last few days, as the company ramps up for the release of its third quarter earnings on February 1st. Yesterday, EA's stock closed at $17.54 per share, which, in context, meant that the gaming goliath's stock was down 30 percent since hitting its 52-week high in early November. This drop was mostly due to the collective shock relating to the news concerning its recently released title, Star Wars: The Old Republic, which now has a ridiculous price tag attached to it -- as Wall Street is estimating the cost to be between $150 and $200 million.

An Initial Party Offering? China's communists go for an IPO of their news site.

China's Communist Party plans to sell stocks in the online version of its official mouthpiece the People?s Daily to raise money.

The ruling Chinese Communist party is using a classic capitalist scheme to raise money: An IPO.

Not that the party (slogan: ?Serve the People?) is offering the public shares in itself. But it plans to sell stocks in the online version of its official mouthpiece the People?s Daily.

The website?is having a hard time keeping up with the commercial competition, according to its owner People?s Daily Online Co. Ltd. in a preliminary prospectus filed with the China Securities Regulatory Commission. It gets one tenth the visitors than the most popular Chinese Web portal Sina.com, for example.?

To rectify this, the company wants to raise $83.5 million through an IPO in Shanghai to ?strengthen our marketing and expand our services and products,? the prospectus says. That way it hopes to catch up with Sina, which has tapped international capital markets by listing on the NASDAQ.

The company makes no reference to the fact that the party-owned website may owe its low profile to the stultifying nature of its content. Indeed, it mentions the ?People?s Daily journalism tradition? as one of its competitive advantages, which sounds a little dubious.

Another?selling point?it boasts, though,?is the ?preferential policy? the website enjoys; this means that the party which owns it also owns the government that makes the rules deciding who else is allowed to disseminate online news in China. Now that is a competitive advantage.?

Daniel Klein: Prune And Perennial Plate Food Porn

The third and final episode in our NYC Trilogy is all about Food Porn. After watching chickens get slaughtered in Queens and vegetables grow in several boroughs, this Manhattan video is just a montage of our wonderful dinner at Prune Restaurant one evening in September. It was amazing to cook at such an incredible place and with such great company.

The menu for the evening was:

  • Crab on toast
  • Oyster and ceviche
  • Egg en cocotte with grilled mushrooms and watercress
  • Grilled Pig Heart with cucumber, pumpkin seed and green tomato salad
  • Deep fried porgy with tomatoes and bottarga
  • Poached peach with rooftop honey lassi

Enjoy the video!
