Many financial services providers tout their financial advice as being for free. But we all know nobody does anything for free. Aparently there are a bewlidering number of ways in which investment advisors make their money such as trading commissions hourly frees trailer fees management fees performance fees and so on. I would like to hold an online survey to gauge which methods most YAnswers users come across and their views on each method or which method their prefer most. Thanks for taking the time to answer my question.

Many financial advisors will offer free consultations in the hope that you will decide to purchase investmenst products from them. Although there are many commissionbased advsiors who are excellent there is a growing belief that using a feebased advisor tends to eliminate any potential conflicts of interest. If an advisor charges a fee either hourly or based on assets managed 1 per year then there is no incentive to him to put you in highcommission products for his own gain. There should be no commissions with a feebased advisor.
Need help finding the right financial advisor who acts in the best interest of the client There are three types of financial advisors out there 1 those that only charge a fee for their services feeonly have a fiduciary requirement 2 those who earn a commission from the products they sell you feebased only have a suitability standard and 3 those who have a feebased side to their commissioned business which allows them to play both sides when its convenient for NorthStar Financial Planners Inc feeonly financial planning firm in Plantation Florida The Fine Art of Wealth Management.

What percentage of assets should i pay a financial advisor are fees negotiable.
DanA reasonable fee to pay a financial advisor depends on a couple of factors. First of all what services are you looking for and do you need those services ongoing or just onetime an initial financial plan. Secondly the percentage of assets charged will depend on the level of assets the advisor is managing for you the more assets the lower the fee in percentage terms. A general rule of thumb is advisors typically charge 1 of assets under management but advisors also can have a minimum annual fee or a minimum account size that can make the true fee higher depending on the size of your account.
Some firms that work with clients with assets below this level often charge well above 1 sometimes as much as 2 of assets. As for services one distinction to consider is if you are looking for a comprehensive financial plan or just management of your investments. Some firms will include financial planning in the asset management cost which tends to result in a higher percentage of asset fee. If you dont need a comprehensive financial plan or just need a plan done onetime you may be better off using a fixed fee financial planning firm and then finding a financial advisor charging a lower percentage of assets fee for ongoing investment management.
Full disclosure I run an independent financial advisory firm called InvestSimply. Our fees started at of assets. We focus on investment management and dont provide comprehensive financial planning.
What exactly do they do And how much do they make Do they work for big investing firms or what.
What exactly do they doPersonal financial advisors assess the financial needs of individuals and assist them with investments tax laws and insurance decisions. Advisors help their clients identify and plan for shortterm and longterm goals. Advisors help clients plan for retirement education expenses and general investment choices. Many also provide tax advice or sell insurance. Although most planners offer advice on a wide range of topics some specialize in areas such as retirement and estate planning or risk management.
The middle 50 percent earned between 46390 and 119290. Personal financial advisors who work for financial services firms are often paid a salary plus bonus. Bonuses are not included in the wage data listed here. Advisors who work for financial investment or planning firms or who are selfemployed typically earn their money by charging a percentage of the clients assets under management. They may also earn money by charging hourly fees for their services or through fees on stock and insurance purchases. Advisors generally receive commissions for financial products they sell in addition to charging a fee.
Do they work for big investing firms or whatMany individuals enter the field by working for a bank or fullservice brokerage. Because the occupation requires sales people who have strong selling skills will ultimately be most successful. A college degree and certification can lend credibility.
I have about 700 dollars to invest on a monthly basis. I have been learning about stocks for a few months now but it really takes time to research a companys finances and track performance. This is time that I just dont have. Would I consult with an investment banker or someone who does financial planning.
I understand your frustration. There are several problems with finding someone who will do this for you. First a professional charges a minimum fee for each transaction therefore one fee for buying and one for selling. Assuming the minimum is 35 it will cost you 70 per stock. Therefore you will need a 10 return before you begin to make any profit. It also narrows your choice of stock as you would need to limit your choices to stocks that are less expensive. Some professionals are simply investment representatives who have been hired for their sales skills and have no background in financial planning.
Their sales skills will be top notch but their knowledge will be less than yours. Make sure that they have at least achieved the status of Certified Financial Planner and not just their license to sell. You will notice that some of these salesmen answer questions on this site as a way to promote their company. Most of that fee goes to the company and very little goes to the advisor. As he is only performing one transaction for you in every month he will make very little time for you. It is not worth his time and effort until your account grows to a substantial amount.
Large financial firms have research departments that recommend particular stocks that the advisor can choose from. These picks are usually large companies that are a safe bet. You could with minimal research choose to buy either a mutual fund where you pay a money manager to make the buys and sells or an ETF which is like owning a piece of the market. Many of the online brokerages have excellent research material available. With a little time and effort you could do your own buys and sells at a much lower cost to you.
The key to making money is to diversify and to have an exit plan. Diversification is more than buying different stocks. It means that you have investments that include cash bonds equities etc. Chosen from different countries and in different fields. Your exit plan could include stop losses options etc. Always remember that what goes up must come down. There is a book called Investing for Dummies which is an excellent book to get you started. It would also be a good idea to use one of the accounts with play money so that you become familiar with procedure and the wisdom of your choices.
They can set up a plan for you to help you get started taking into account tax consequences etc. You could make this an appointment that you keep on an annual basis. You can also visit the websites of a number of financial planners in your area. What stocks do they have listed on their sites What items do you buy on a regular basis Are there any items that you have recommended to others Do some research on the company that produces those items would they be a good investment Do you want solid blue ship stocks or a shooting star.
